Presentation Overview

I have designed my presentation in a lecture style with Q and A to take the audience on a journey through formative events in my life. My childhood dream of being a part of the all-American game of baseball, and the story of how my dream eventually came true will set the tone.

Against this background, the presentation will focus on issues such as how sexual orientation can affect one's professional, college and personal life. I will describe the constant fear I lived with of having my sexual orientation discovered and how it affected my performance as a major league umpire. I will convey an impression of the anxiety that forced me to live in a box and lead a double life. This topic is especially relevant to the audience, I believe, as it speaks to an almost universal experience: the fear of judgment and labels and the effect it has on hindering productive relationships in our professional and personal lives.

I will also talk about the role my sexual orientation played in the loss of my job and the fact that discrimination based on sexual orientation is still rampant in our society due to the continued suppression of the Employment Non Discrimination Act.

Finally, my presentation will focus on the principal that being true to yourself and respecting others for who they are helps promote understanding of sexual orientation and creates a more positive environment whether it be in the workplace or on the college campus.
